Hurricanes

  • 1960: Hurricane Donna A tropical wave that would become Hurricane Donna was first detected off the coast of Africa near Cape Verde. The system grew into a major hurricane that traveled across the Atlantic, impacting the Caribbean, the Bahamas, and the U.S. East Coast from Florida to New England, causing widespread damage and over 360 fatalities.
  • 1994: Hurricane/Typhoon John The longest-lasting tropical cyclone on record, Hurricane John, was formed. It would last 31 days as it crossed the international dateline twice, becoming Typhoon John and then Hurricane John again.
  • 2005: Hurricane Katrina A devastating Category 3 hurricane, Katrina, made landfall in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana. It caused unprecedented flooding in New Orleans, as levees failed and submerged 80% of the city. A powerful storm surge and winds also ravaged the Mississippi coastline.

Rain and floods

  • 1962: Hackberry, LA The town received 22 inches of rain in 24 hours, setting a new state record for Louisiana.
  • 1988: Tropical Storm Chris The remnants of Tropical Storm Chris soaked eastern Pennsylvania with up to 5.5 inches of rain. High winds severely damaged boats in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.
  • 1989: Anchorage, AK and Maryville, MO Anchorage received a record 9.60 inches of rain for the month of August. Meanwhile, northwest Missouri received up to 8.20 inches of rain over three days.

Other notable events

  • 1965: Mount Washington, NH The mountain received 2.5 inches of snow, a national record for August. Temperatures in New England dropped significantly, with some locations experiencing their earliest freeze on record.
  • 1983: Central South Dakota A severe hailstorm dropped baseball-sized hail for two hours, destroying crops and damaging homes in Faulk County.
  • 1987: North Carolina Powerful thunderstorms brought large hail and strong winds, downing trees and causing damage in the piedmont region.
  • 1988: North Central US An outbreak of cool air set record low temperatures in 10 cities. Deerfield, South Dakota, recorded a low of 23 degrees.
  • 1989: West Virginia Evening thunderstorms with destructive lightning caused widespread damage in Doddridge County, downing numerous trees and causing fires.
